Last year in celebration of Father’s Day, we published a beautiful post from a dad to his newborn son, Lucas. The words were poignant, meaningful and heartfelt. Sixteen months later, Dad has penned another note to his Lucas. Read on to see the ups and downs of the first year of parenthood, and the wonder that a father has for his son.
I can’t believe it’s been 16 months already. You came into this world on February 10, 2015 at 12:30 a.m. weighing in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. For the last 16 months, I’ve been in wonderful bliss of being a father to a son, my first and only. Every time I got to hold you in the hospital and get to embrace you now it’s an incredible feeling, and so very different from when I got to hold your sisters. It wasn’t what I thought it would be like, it’s so much more. You’re no longer this tiny baby in my arms, but a tiny little man complete with personality and attitude, who’s already climbing and running around the house. After all the dirty diapers, nighttime battles, feedings, clothing changes, trips to the doctors, bumps and bruises, babbles and first words, snuggles and kisses, that wonderment in your eyes of learning something new or look of sadness because you’re getting dropped off at daycare when you’d rather not have mom or dad leave your side, I can tell you this: the last 16 months have felt long and short, short as in where the heck did it go short, hard and effortless but exactly where we are all supposed to be.
The one fact that has been undeniably constant is my love and your mother’s love for you. A love that is growing at a rate just faster than you are growing, lol. The best part about you is how happy you are, every single day! I wish I could freeze time, for this is an incredible stage you’re at. You wake up with a smile on your face that just melts Mommy and makes me proud. But, I’m sure each new stage of your life will be just as incredible and I’ll be waiting to freeze time then, too.
You are so truly affectionate, and giggly. You love to giggle and dance. Mommy and I can both already tell that you’re flirtatious (Mommy’s not happy that you’re looking at other woman already, lol), spirited, silly and very smart. You’re going to be one of those people that others are automatically drawn to. A pure indication is the way everyone in the family fawns over you, from your sisters, cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles and even friends. Needless to say you just LOVE all the attention!
There hasn’t been a day, not a single day since you were born that I haven’t appreciated how lucky your mother and I are to have a son. A son, a Prince among a houseful of Princesses. The incredible happiness and love you have brought into our lives in priceless. That day 16 months ago that you were born was life changing for me. I’m so happy that your mother and I had our first son together; it couldn’t be more fitting or perfect! As we watch you dance, listen to you roar with laughter at the most random of things, in amazement of your strength and stacking skills, receiving of your slobbery, open-mouthed kisses, are moments that I never want to miss. You mean everything to us, and that will never change.
No matter what happens in life, or what our lives become, my love and your mother’s love will always be that place you can call home. We will always be that ultimate comfort for you. Lucas, you are the one of the great loves in of my life. Truly, the cutesiest baby in the world! I’m so proud to be your dad. Mom and I love you so very much. Love, Dad
